CONFIRMATION SUNDAY

Psalm 1:1-2
Happy are those
who do not follow the advice of the wicked
or take the path that sinners tread
or sit in the seat of scoffers,
but their delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on His law they meditate day and night.

WE DIRECT OUR MINDS TO GOD
DECLARING OUR UNITY IN WORSHIP
Students: Who enables us to come to this time and place?
Congregation: It is God — Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — who is working in us, both to will and to do His good pleasure, now and always.
Students: What does God want most of us here?
Congregation: That we remember what God has done, acknowledge God’s presence with us, and witness to God’s steadfast love and mercy.
Students: This is the Lord’s doing.
Congregation: And it is marvelous in our eyes!
Students: Alleluia!
Congregation: Amen!

PRAYER SEEKING GOD’S PRESENCE
Lord God, Creator of the world and all that’s in it, we thank You for what you have done and will continue to do with our sons and daughters. Walk with them in life. Keep the evil one from obstructing their path. You see all. You know where the water is deep. Keep them from danger. Order their steps and guide their feet while they run the race of faith. May the good work that You have begun in them be brought to completion at the day of Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen.

GOD, WE’RE LISTENING
Psalm 1:1-6
read by Bertie Del Angel

Happy are those
who do not follow the advice of the wicked
or take the path that sinners tread
or sit in the seat of scoffers,
but their delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on His law they meditate day and night.
They are like trees
    planted by streams of water,
which yield their fruit in its season,
and their leaves do not wither.
In all that they do, they prosper.

The wicked are not so
but are like chaff that the wind drives away.
Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment
nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous,
for the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.

Proverbs 2:1-11
read by Ryan Jackson

My child, if you accept my words
and treasure up my commandments within you,
making your ear attentive to wisdom
and inclining your heart to understanding,
if you indeed cry out for insight
and raise your voice for understanding,
if you seek it like silver
and search for it as for hidden treasures—
then you will understand the fear of the Lord
and find the knowledge of God.
For the Lord gives wisdom;
    from His mouth come knowledge and understanding;
He stores up sound wisdom for the upright;
He is a shield to those who walk blamelessly,
guarding the paths of justice
and preserving the way of His faithful ones.
Then you will understand righteousness and justice
    and equity, every good path,
for wisdom will come into your heart,
    and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul;
prudence will watch over you,
    and understanding will guard you.

Philippians 2:1-11
read by Ella Brask

If, then, there is any comfort in Christ, any consolation from love, any partnership in the Spirit, any tender affection and sympathy, make my joy complete: be of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or empty conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves. Let each of you look not to your own interests but to the interests of others. Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus,

who, though He existed in the form of God,
did not regard equality with God
    as something to be grasped,
but emptied Himself,
taking the form of a slave,
    assuming human likeness.
And being found in appearance as a human,
He humbled himself
and became obedient to the point of death—
    even death on a cross.

Therefore God exalted Him even more highly
    and gave Him the name
that is above every other name,
so that at the name given to Jesus
    every knee should bend,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue should confess
    that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.

GOD HELP US
Prayer

THE LORD’S PRAYER
with confirmands, in unison
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

THE APOSTLES’ CREED
with confirmands, in unison
I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hades; the third day He rose again from the dead;

He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy Christian Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

LITURGY OF CONFIRMATION
with pastors, confirmands, and congregation
Pastor Ryan: As your pastor and teacher, it is my prayer that these expressions of faith may provide the basis for the commitment of your life to Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord.

Answering only for yourself, and in perfect freedom to be silent if you cannot yet answer, I now call upon you to respond to the following questions.

Confession of faith
Do you confess personal faith in Jesus Christ and desire, with God’s help, to be his disciple?

I do.

Do you believe with the Church of Jesus Christ that the Bible, the Old and New Testaments, is the word of God, telling the story of God and God’s people in the past and guiding them today? If so, answer, “I do.”

I do.

As you continue in your life, do you intend to keep worshiping in Christ’s church, listening to his word, and responding to his call, according to your faith?

I do.

So be it, according to your faith.

GIFTS
Yoke
“Come to me, all you who are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30

Bible
But as for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have known sacred writings that are able to instruct you for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that the person of God may be proficient, equipped for every good work.” 1 Timothy 3:14-17

Cross
“Then he said to them all, ‘If any wish to come after me, let them deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will save it.’” Luke 9:23-24

Salt
“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything but is thrown out and trampled under foot.” Matthew 5:13

Candle
“You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. People do not light a lamp and put it under the bushel basket; rather, they put it on the lamp stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16
